Hey Beautiful!

Collagen is without a doubt one of the most buzzed about supplements on the market these days! It is popping up all over social media and is incorporated in all sorts of different products on shelves worldwide – everything from bars, beverages, cosmetics, supplements, powders and pills. I think it’s preeeeetty safe to say that this is definitely a wellness trend that won’t be disappearing any time soon.

I am not normally one to go crazy on the supplement wagon because I like to follow these two philosophies:

  1. You shouldn’t need supplementation if you are following a balanced diet and receive all the vitamins and minerals your body needs.
  2. Only supplement if your body is deficient in something and needs supplementation accordingly.

SO! Generally, I keep my supplementation very minimal based on the above mentioned reasons AND also, because I am personally quite sceptical of new supplements on the market as I’m VERY aware of the persuasive power of clever marketing. BUT! I must admit, when it comes to collagen supplementation and all the marketed benefits that it comes with, such as:

  • Promotes anti- aging
  • Supports healthy hair, skin and nails
  • Promotes bone density
  • Assists in rebuilding cartilage
  • Promotes elasticity and strength in skin
  • Reduces the appearance of cellulite

… I have been VERY curious to test out if all the buzz is worth it!!! I mean, as a girl – of course many of us will be totally drawn to the idea of glowing hair, skin, nails, anti-aging benefits and reduced appearance of cellulite?! #realtalk, we are only human after all and glowing, happy, healthy skin is ALWAYS in!

Over the last couple of months, I have personally been trying out some collagen enriched products and incorporating them into my daily routine (which I have been LOVING) AND I’ve also dived into some research behind collagen to give you a fair review, Beautiful! P.S. You know that I NEVER recommend or review products unless I have tried and tested them out on myself first.

With my curiosity getting the better of me and my WBFF bikini prep underway during winter, I figured that now would be as good a time as any to put collagen supplementation to the test.

The areas that mainly interest me personally are;

  1. Glowing skin and healthier hair
  2. Increased muscle mass
  3. Reduced appearance of cellulite
  4. Healthy joints.

I have been trying a MYSTERY product over the last couple of months which I am SOOOO excited to finally be sharing with you in this blog, keep reading to find out more!

BUT FIRST! What is collagen?

Did you know that collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in the human body, Gorgeous? It is a complex protein which makes up 30% of the body’s protein (1) and contains 19 different amino acids. As some of you will know, amino acids play a very important role in our health as they are the primary building blocks for our bodies.

Collagen acts as the “glue”  that holds everything together and it can be found in our bones, blood, digestive tract, muscles, tendons, skin, hair and nails. From an aesthetic point of view, collagen helps to give our skin strength and elasticity.

There are at least 28 different types of collagen, the most common are types 1 – 5 with type 1 (bovine) being the most plentiful of them all – accounting for 90% of our body’s total collagen. Type 1 collagen is made of densely packed fibres which helps to provide structure for your skin, bones, cartilage and connective tissue (1)(2)

What Causes the Depletion of Collagen in our Bodies?

Our bodies naturally produce collagen BUT this process does begin to slow down as we get older causing the noticeable signs of aging such as visible wrinkles and joint pain to name a few (3)

Collagen depletion can also be caused by certain health (nutritional deficiencies, digestive problems, genetic/chronic diseases etc.) and lifestyle factors. Studies indicated that as eating excessive amounts of sugar (4), smoking (5) and over exposure to the sun (6) can ultimately have an effect on your collagen production.

This is where paying attention to our lifestyles, eating food rich in collagen and taking collagen enriched supplements can be very beneficial!

What Studies Have to Say About The Benefits of Collagen Supplements

While existing research does seem promising, it is important to note that more in depth studies are still needed due to collagen supplementation still being fairly new on the market.

I have dived into quite a bit of the existing research and I’ve chosen a few of my favourites which show that consuming a collagen supplement can assist with:

  • Skin Elasticity & Hydration (7) (8) (9)
  • Reduction of Joint Pain (8) (10)
  • Increasing Muscle Mass (11)
  • Reducing the Appearance of Cellulite (12)

*Note: There a more studies regarding other possible benefits, but for the purpose of this blog I have chosen to highlight the areas I feel are most relevant.

The Safety of Collagen Supplements & Choosing the Right One

Negative side effects of collagen supplements seem to be fairly uncommon except in cases of allergies or having more than the recommended dosages/servings.

My Tips:

  • ALWAYS check with your doctor if you are unsure.
  • Stick to the daily intake recommendations as per the product label.
  • For any possible allergies, be sure to read the ingredients list! FYI: Where collagen types have been listed, types 1 and 3 can be bovine (beef), fish or egg whites and type 2 collagen is usually chicken.
  • High-Quality is king.
  • Opt for collagen peptides or hydrolyzed collagen.
  • Some say that they do not enjoy the aftertaste of plain collagen powder – simply add it to your smoothie, porridge or even in a cup of coffee and your problem is solved.

The Current Collagen Supplement that I am Using:

I’ve been keeping this a secret for the last little while, but now I’m FINALLY revealing it to you… YOUTHFUL LIVING WHEY REJUV COLLAGEN PROTEIN.

This product could not have come at a better time for me! During my prep, my coach has got me having a protein shake as my post workout and this is what I have been enjoying with a side of blueberries every day, SOOO YUM!

Youthful Living’s Whey Rejuv Collagen Protein (shop here) is SO much more than just a protein powder, it goes above and beyond with added *Hydrolyzed Type 1 (Bovine – cow/beef derived) Collagen at 5g per serving, as well as added digestive enzymes, Resveratrol and anti-oxidants. SO much goodness all in one scoop! I’m totally obsessed with the Double Chocolate Delight flavour – it’s like having  a chocolate milkshake. Try it and you will see what I mean. They also have Vanilla Soft Serve too – which is JUST as delicious!

*Hydrolyzed means that the collagen has undergone a process called hydrolyzation. In a nutshell, this means that the collagen has been broken down into individualized collagen peptides for optimal absorption by the body.

If a protein shake isn’t your thing, then Youthful Living also has a super delish ProDrink with added Collagen (shop here) which has 10.5g of collagen per serving, 0.1g of sugar plus added MSM, glucosamine and co-enzyme Q10. Once again, all the goodness in just one scoop. I have personally been enjoying the raspberry flavour but you can also choose between from Naartjie, blueberry and unflavoured).

As with all supplements, you do need to give it a significant amount of time to be able to notice a difference. A few things that I have noticed over the last little while; my skin is less dry and red (I was really struggling with that a couple of months ago – thanks winter), I had a knee niggle which has settled, I have definitely gained muscle, I’m getting tons of compliments on my skin and in general, I am feeling super strong, healthy and fit. Having said this, I cannot claim that all these things are solely as a result of adding collagen into my daily routine as there are definitely quite a few other lifestyle factors and other healthy habits that are contributing to the overall outcome.

BUT, I can tell you this, I am thoroughly enjoying my collagen supplement addition to my lifestyle and WBFF prep. I am certainly going to keep this up and I’m excited to continue to reap the rewards going forward.
