The Secret to my WBFF Prep and My Top Two Sports Supplements
HOLY SMOKES! Where on earth is the time going?! I cannot believe that I am 4 weeks out from making my comeback to the WBFF stage!
It has been months of hard work and I finally feel like its all starting to come together now – I can almost see the light at the end of this tunnel! All the little successes and changes are adding up to some BIG results. It might sound a little cliché BUT, you really can do ANYTHING that you set your mind to… NEVER forget it Beautiful!
My Secret To This Prep?
I can tell you there has been NO magic pill.
NO special supplement.
NO secret diet.
NO clever exercise tricks.
NO quick fixes.
The truth is that its all boiled down to months and MONTHS (a total 7 months by the time I step on stage) of hard work and dedication. I know this is probably THE most unexciting and least juicy secret EVER and probably not what you were expecting to read.
Rather than opting for a quick fix or resorting to drastic measures, I chose to do things the right way which also meant that it has been the harder way – nothing good comes easy! It has been a gradual prep which has allowed me to slowly get into the swing of things. Following this approach has note only made my prep enjoyable but healthy, happy and balanced too.
The results that you are all currently seeing on me and will see on stage day are the outcome of sticking to both the basics of nutrition and training. Fueling myself and exercising with purpose – nothing fancy, crazy or drastic just PURE dedication, perseverance and focus.
Aside from the above, the secret has also lied in:
- Investing in the best guidance possible – There is SO much misleading information out there these days and unfortunately you get some coaches who can cause some seriously damage. So pleeeeease INVEST in the best! It is totally worth it!
- Fostering the correct mindset – Rather than looking for a quick fix or looking externally, realize that to achieve your goal and the results that you want, you need to have a positive, kind YET determined and FIERCE mindset to get there!
- Your heart being in the right place – No matter what, always make sure that you are doing what is RIGHT & true to YOU!
My Top Two Sports Supplements During my Prep
If you have followed me for a while you will know that I am more of a stick-to-the-basics less is more kinda of girl. Whether it’s my training, nutrition, fashion sense OR sports supplements, I like to keep it simple!
I have always been of the opinion that supplements are not they key to getting results. You don’t need them, but in some instances, they are really nice to have for that added boost or needed convenience.
Ultimately, results are largely due to:
- A balanced diet (75 – 80% wholefoods based) in accordance to your personal macros
- An awesome workout routine that challenges you, is suitable to your goals and most importantly is something that you ENJOY!
- Good quality sleep
- Stress Management
It is important for you to understand that supplements are not miracle workers and they are not the be all and end all to helping you achieve your goals. Rather think of supplements as that extra little bit of support helping you to workout, get important nutrients in and recover THAT much better. *Ultimately, supplements will not make much of a difference if your nutrition, exercise and certain lifestyle factors are not up to par first and foremost.
Having said that, there are two sport supplements that I have religiously been using though out my prep to give me that extra bit of support (I also often recommend these to my clients too…)
HANDS DOWN my number 1 and favourite sports supplement of ALL! A staple in my diet and kitchen all year around.
During my WBFF prep, I have enjoyed my protein shake post workout either with a tablespoon of nut better, an apple or blueberries… YUM!
I also absolutely LOVE to add protein powder into my morning smoothie OR smoothie bowl, bowl of oats, protein balls or some healthy treat baking!
Protein powder is AWESOME for ease and convenience, ESPECIALLY for those who have limited time, struggle to consume enough daily protein or want to stimulate muscle protein synthesis (while you are lifting weights in the gym, you are actually causing little micro-tears to your muscle fibers – it is in the healing of these muscle fibers post workout that help you to get stronger and build lean muscle). Consuming a protein shake (within 30 – 60 minutes) post workout is ideal for muscle recovery and refueling.
There ae some fantastic vegan and non-vegan options on the market these days and I often like to alternate between the two. I am currently using the Youthful Living Whey Gourmet Chocolate Hazelnut flavour (click here) AND really loving it – not too sweet, doesn’t taste artificial and I find that it digests well. Always opt for protein powders that have minimal good quality ingredients and no hidden nasties! There is also a MAGICAL Unicorn Rainbows flavour with little sprinkles inside… the BEST part, when you add water and mix the shake – the powder goes from white to purple…. MAGICAL !!!!!
BCAAs stand for Branched Chain Amino Acids… JUST in case you were wondering, Beautiful!
There are 20 different kinds of amino acids. 11 are non-essential (meaning that the body produces these amino acids on its own) and 9 are essential (meaning that your body does not produce them on its own therefore we have to obtain them from the food that we eat)
BCAAs contain three out of the nine essential amino acids (namely, isoleucine, leucine, and valine), these three amino acids particularly play a supporting role in the healing and recovery of broken down muscle which is why BCAAs are a supplement of interest when it comes to fitness, performance and sport.
Commonly referred to as the building block of proteins, studies indicate that BCAAs can reduce fatigue, improve endurance, prevent muscle breakdown, assist with muscle soreness and enhance muscle protein synthesis.
BCAAs are not typically a sport supplement that I take all the time, BUT in periods of harder than normal training, like now, this is one of my go-to supplements! I do believe that by taking this supplement during my prep that my endurance during training and recovery afterwards has been that EXTRA bit better.
I recently recommended that a client of mine take a BCAA supplement, at first she was a little hesitant about taking it BUT – after a little while, she has noticed less fatigue, feeling stronger and in general, better during her workouts. Coupled with good balanced eating and a KILLER training program, taking a BCAA supplement has most definitely helped to give her that little EXTRA something, something!
The BCAA supplement that I have used throughout my entire prep is also from Youthful Living (click here) BRAND NEW to their range and launched at the PERFECT time for me – JUST when I needed it! I personally enjoy taking my BCAA during my workout. I place a scoop into a bottle and top it up with lots of cold water. Then I sip it throughout my workout, its SOOOOO refreshing P.S. Surprisingly, the passion fruit flavor has been my go-to! And I am not normally a passion fruit lover!
Don’t forget, Beautiful! Youthful Living and I have teamed up to give you a very SPECIAL discount coupon: HG001 which will give you 10% off when you shop online at https://youthfulliving.co.za (shop now) Youthful Living products are also sold at Dischem stores nationwide… YAAAAAAAY!
