Winter isn’t over just yet which means that the dreaded flu season is still upon us! Read below to find out what I did to fight off the flu recently.

A month ago I came down with the worst head flu ever which happened to be while we were on a family holiday in beautiful Zanzibar. Although this was such a bummer, I realized how badly my little body was in desperate need of some TLC and lots of rest! Together with my homeopathic doctor’s recommendations and some of my own personal remedies, I was able to eventually get rid of the nasty flu….YAY!

Here’s How I did it:

  • Vitamin C – I took 1000mg on the hour every hour for the first few days. I normally take 2000mg of vitamin C each day for general immunity maintenance. You will definitely need to up your vitamin C intake when trying to get rid of the flu.
  • Echinacea Drops – The amount of drops that you take will depend on product instructions but generally you can take the recommended amount up to three times a day. I am warning you… Echinacea does not taste great but it works like a charm!
  • Eucalyptus Oil – This is a new tip that I have picked up from my homeopath which I absolutely love. Put 5 eucalyptus oil drops into 2 liters of boiling water. Place a towel over your head, take deep breaths and inhale through the nose – even better, close one nostril at a time. You can also take one drop of Eucalyptus oil and apply just inside your nostrils – it does burn slightly for a few minutes. I repeated this process ever 2 – 3 hours and it did wonders for clearing my sinuses and helping with my headache.
  • Elderberry Throat Spray – The dosage will also depend on the product instructions – I did 5 sprays about 3 /4 times a day. This is my go-to spray for a sore throat!
  • Hot Lemon Water with Ginger & Honey – 2/3 cups of this a day is AMAZING for boosting your immune system!
  • Panado / Paracetamol – I normally try my best to stay away from pain killers but sometimes when your head or body is THAT sore a girl has got to do what she has got to do! I had the worst headaches EVER (no joke) and taking some paracetamol was my saving grace at times!
  • Water – Drink at least 2 liters of filtered water a day. This really helps to cleanse and flush out your system.
  • Rest, rest, rest! – When your body gets sick its literally screaming at you to slow down. Take extra care to not over do it. It’s perfectly okay to just do absolutely nothing and let your body heal (in fact, this is exactly what you need).
  • Food – Ideally, make sure that you are giving yourself lots of veggies, whole grains, fruits & good quality proteins. It is preferable that you reduce your sugar, alcohol and dairy intake while your body is in recovery mode. Tune in to your body and listen to what it needs. REAL TALK: Generally I am an avid whole food eater, but sometimes when I am really sick all my body wants is PLAIN. CARBS. How interesting?! I am talking about plain pasta, plain chips, plain toast etc. This is not ideal but for some strange reason it is the only thing that my body can stomach during these times. SO! Although beautiful, simple, whole foods is recommended you still need to listen to your body and give it what its asking for!
