Know Your Worth
As a #girlboss and blogger, knowing my worth over the years sure has been a tricky business. And today, I was yet again reminded of the importance of believing in your value, never settling for anything less than you deserve and not feeling the least bit sorry about it!
I was once afraid of people saying, “Who does she think she is”. Now I have the courage to stand and say, “This is who I am.” – Oprah (Me in a nutshell, thanks Ops!)
I see far too many women around me giving ridiculous discounts on their value to others and in the past, I was definitely one of them too! But lately, I have turned over a whole new leaf. Where I once used to let others define (and downgrade) my worth, I am now the one who dictates my worth and as a result have the utmost confidence to walk away from anyone who doesn’t see or appreciate what I bring to the table.
SIDE NOTE: This blog is mainly to do with my experience as a blogger and female entrepreneur but all the insights and tips are universal to similar situations.
I started blogging 4 years ago simply to share my passion for health and fitness. Healthy Girl started to grow fairly quickly and before I knew it, like-minded brands and publications were approaching me to promote their products/services and create content for them.
At many points in my career I have had to work for “free”. I’ve been expected to give up my time, create, contribute and not get paid for it. And if I did happen to get paid for it, chances are that most of the time, it was a negotiated rate which was less than my actual worth!
I was even once approached by a brand who, get this, contacted me first, told me how much they LOVE what I am doing, offered me a silly value exchange and after I tried to negotiate a fair deal (for all the work they were asking me to do), they turned around and tried to bully my value down by attempting to convince me that my social media traction was dropping. UMMMM, then why on earth did you contact me in the first place, Buddy?! Just like that they took my value from hero to zero.
Now with any blogger and influencer work, brands love to have you posting about their products and services. Often, the value that you get in return is free products, services, holidays, exposure etc. While I know this all sounds very exciting, I promise this novelty wears off. Why? Free things DO NOT pay your bills. SIMPLE! I have learnt this lesson the hard way!
There definitely comes a point in your life where you have to realize what you offer and make damn sure that you get what you deserve. And for me, that particular point was last year. I no longer wanted to give my years of hard work, time, energy and effort away for a fraction of what it was all worth. It was draining me!
NEVER… EVER feel bad for having the courage to ask for what you deserve! In an ideal world, we would all be able to happily do what sets our soul on fire without worrying about earning a cent. But at the end of the day without money and without defining, owning and communicating your value to the world you will not be able to support yourself and make your dreams come true (REAL TALK).
Know that the price of anything is the amount of life (and time) you exchange for it. Just to remind you, your time and your life is literally the two most valuable things that you could ever have. And the minute you realize this you will stop giving people discounts on your worth! Best you EXCHANGE WISELY my beautiful friend!
This is YOUR life, you only have one chance… DON’T play small! You are SO worthy and the world needs what you’ve got. NEVER let anyone try to convince you otherwise, Okay?!
Its situations like today where I am SO incredibly grateful for all my wonderful clients who actually value the work that I do and support the business that makes Healthy Girl possible. This is something that is appreciated from the bottom of my heart and I feel incredibly blessed to be able to create awesome things with even better people, especially for all you amazing woman who are reading this right now!
